1. The core frame
Thorbis is software — not a financial institution
Thorbis does not hold, take custody of, or transmit funds. Thorbis is not a bank, money transmitter or money-services business, lender, payment processor, accountant, tax preparer, or payroll processor, and is not your agent for any of those purposes. Money moves through third-party providers and directly between you and the people you transact with — not through Thorbis.
These Payments & Money-Movement Terms describe how money-related features work in the Service, the role third-party providers play, and the important limits on each feature. They form part of, and are governed by, the Terms of Service. Capitalized terms used but not defined here have the meaning given in the Terms of Service.
2. Payment processing
Card and other customer payments are processed by Stripe using a connected-account model. The Customer (the business) is the merchant of record and maintains its own account with the payment processor; the processor's own agreement governs that relationship.
Funds flow from Your End Customer to the Customer's processor account — never through or into Thorbis. Thorbis records transaction metadata only (for example, that a payment was attempted, its amount, and its status), and does not receive, hold, or route the underlying funds.
The Customer is responsible for its own applicable PCI obligations, for issuing refunds, and for handling chargebacks and disputes with its End Customers. The processor's determinations about authorization, settlement, holds, reserves, and disputes control.
3. Processing fees
Processing fees are charged by the payment processor when the Customer collects money from its End Customers. They are separate from the Thorbis subscription, are not a Thorbis usage meter, and are not offset by the plan's monthly utility allowance.
The schedule below is representative and illustrative only. Actual fees are set by the payment processor and by the Customer's configuration, and may change. The processor's published pricing and the Customer's processor agreement control.
| Payment type | Representative fee |
|---|---|
| Online card | 2.99% + $0.30 |
| In-person / tap-to-pay | 2.79% + $0.10 |
| ACH direct debit | 0.99% (capped at $10) |
| Bank transfer / wire | 0.75% (capped at $7.50) |
| Manual card entry | +0.5% |
| International cards | +1.5% |
| Dispute / chargeback | $15 flat |
Processing fees are separate and are not a Thorbis subscription charge
Fees charged by the payment processor when the Customer collects money from Your End Customers are governed by the processor's own agreement. They are not part of the Thorbis subscription, are not billed as a Thorbis usage meter, and are not offset by the plan's utility allowance. Thorbis does not set these fees.
4. Payouts
The Customer can withdraw its available processor balance. The payment processor determines available balance, eligibility, timing, and any holds or reserves.
Instant payouts
A 1.5% fee applies to instant payouts. Of that fee, approximately a 0.5% platform margin is retained by Thorbis and the remainder is the processor's cost. Instant payouts are available only to eligible debit-card destinations, in USD only, and are subject to availability and the processor's determination.
Standard payouts
Standard payouts carry no Thorbis fee and typically settle in 2–5 business days, to bank accounts or debit cards, subject to the processor's timing and determination.
Payout figures are estimates until the processor settles
Payout ledger entries shown in the Service are estimates until the payment processor settles and reports the actual amounts and fees. The processor's actual settled amounts and fees control.
5. Buckets
“Buckets” are a budgeting and forecasting feature — virtual labels or envelopes the Customer uses to plan how to allocate its own money. Any allocation percentages or automatic-allocation toggles are planning aids only; balances shown are figures the Customer enters or derives, not actual account balances.
Buckets are a planning tool, not a bank account
Buckets are NOT bank accounts. They do NOT hold or move money, involve NO custody by Thorbis or anyone else, are NOT FDIC-insured, and earn no interest. They are a way to plan and visualize how the Customer intends to allocate money that remains in the Customer's own processor balance or bank account.
6. Bank account linking
Where available, the Customer may connect a bank account through Plaid to verify a payout destination or view account information. Bank linking is a capability that may be made available; it is not necessarily enabled for every customer.
Thorbis does not receive or store bank login credentials — the provider handles authentication — and stores only a limited token and display details such as the last four digits of the account. Bank linking is subject to Plaid's terms and the terms of the relevant financial provider.
7. Financing / buy-now-pay-later
Where available, an End Customer may apply at checkout for financing from a third-party lender (such as Affirm, Klarna, or Wisetack). Financing is a capability that may be made available; it is not necessarily offered for every customer.
The lender — not Thorbis — underwrites the application, sets the APR and terms, decides approval, funds the loan, and is the creditor. Thorbis only facilitates the hand-off of the financing offer; Thorbis makes no credit decision, sets no rates, and provides no loan disclosures.
Required lending disclosures, including those under the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure (TRID) rules where applicable, and all fair-lending obligations, are the lender's responsibility.
8. Bookkeeping and accounting
Where available, accounting and bookkeeping tools and integrations (for example, integrations to accounting software) help the Customer organize its records. These are tools, not accounting or bookkeeping services or advice.
The Customer is solely responsible for the accuracy of its books, for categorization, for applicable accounting standards, and for its relationship with its accountant.
9. Taxes
The Service lets the Customer configure a tax rate and choose whether to charge tax on labor and/or materials, and it applies the rate the Customer enters at invoice time.
Thorbis does NOT determine tax rates, taxability, nexus, or exemptions, does NOT calculate taxes by jurisdiction, and does NOT file or remit any tax. Tax features are not tax advice. The Customer is solely responsible for the rates it enters and for collecting, reporting, and remitting all taxes.
10. Payroll
The Service can compute and record pay runs from time-clock entries, producing a gross figure and a net figure based on a rate the Customer enters. These outputs are estimates for the Customer's review.
Thorbis is not a payroll processor
Thorbis does NOT withhold payroll taxes; does NOT calculate FICA, federal, or state withholding; does NOT file payroll tax returns or issue W-2s or 1099s; does NOT move money to or pay employees; and is NOT a payroll processor or professional employer organization (PEO). The Customer (the employer) is solely responsible for wage-and-hour compliance, withholding, filing, and paying its employees.
11. Ledgers are records, not truth
Balances, payout ledgers, bucket figures, and payroll figures shown in the Service are informational records and estimates. They may differ from the amounts determined by the payment processor, bank, lender, or taxing authority — those determinations control.
12. No financial advice
Nothing in the Service is financial, investment, lending, accounting, or tax advice. You are responsible for your own decisions and for obtaining professional advice where you need it.
13. Disputes and refunds
Disputes and refunds between the Customer and its End Customers are the Customer's responsibility. The Customer is responsible for resolving billing questions, issuing refunds, and responding to chargebacks and disputes with its End Customers, in accordance with the payment processor's processes.
